This is my personal list of free and open-source multimedia tools — for watching, editing, converting, and managing audio, video, and image files. I use most of these regularly, and if I don’t anymore, I’ll probably say why.
I avoid bloatware and commercial nonsense. These tools are either lightweight, powerful, or both — and they don’t nag you with ads.
📺 Video Players
🎞️ K-Lite Codec Pack
If you’re using Windows and want to make sure your media files play without a hitch, K-Lite Codec Pack is a solid choice. It’s a collection of small programs (codecs) that help your computer understand different video and audio formats. I’ve personally used K-Lite together with Media Player Classic for years, and it’s never let me down. That said, not everyone needs it—especially if you use modern players like VLC, which already support most formats. Also, sometimes installing codec packs can cause little glitches or conflicts with other apps, so it’s best if you’re a bit comfortable with tweaking your media setup.
🎥 VLC Media Player
VLC is a super easy and free media player that plays almost any video or music file right away—no extra setup needed. It’s perfect for beginners because it works great out of the box and won’t mess with your system’s codecs. Whether you want to watch a movie, listen to music, or stream online, VLC is a dependable choice that just works, hassle-free.

🖼️ IrfanView
Small but incredibly handy image viewer I’ve been using for years — and it’s still one of the best tools out there. It opens almost any image format instantly, without slowing down your system, which makes it perfect for quick viewing or basic edits.
Need to crop, resize, or batch rename a whole folder of images? IrfanView handles it with ease. It’s got all the essential tools, plus extras like screen capture, slideshow creation, and support for plugins if you want to expand its features.
No clutter, no ads — just a fast, reliable program that does exactly what you need. Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it. And it’s free for non-commercial use.
🔄 Converters & Helpers
🔊 FFmpeg
The Swiss army knife of multimedia. Converts anything into anything (almost). Command-line only, but very powerful.
📼 HandBrake
Simple GUI for video encoding. Great if you want to shrink videos for storage or upload without messing with command-line flags.
đź’¬ Notes
Some of these tools are a bit weird at first, but once you get used to them, they’re hard to beat. I’ll add tips and short walkthroughs later for some of my favorites.
